Bookcase Plan

Are you like me, do you like to make your own furniture as a hobby instead of going to the store and buying it. I love getting in the garage and putting together a simple shelf or a box. I must admit, I am not the best woodworker out there, far from it actually but I love to do it. Anyway, I have been doing this now for a number of years as a little side hobby and I thought it would be nice to explain to you how I make a simple bookcase.

Before you start anything you need to plan it out, so what I want you to go do is draw out your bookcase plan now. Remember you must take into consideration how high it is going to be, how wide it will be and how far it will stick out from the wall. So go draw your plan out now, if you are confused which one may look like, I found a good example for you

Good you now have your bookcase plan… This is the life of the project, if you ever get lost or start scratching your head, this is the thing to turn back to.

Before we can begin building, we need to make sure that we have all the tools in place first… So I want you to go to your garage or shed and look for these, if you haven’t got one of these, try think of an alternative, if no alternative, you will need to go buy it.

Tools Needed

  1. Straightedge
  2. Ruler
  3. Pencil
  4. Handsaw
  5. Nails
  6. Hammer
  7. Square
  8. Mitter Box
  9. Power Saw

Now we have the tools you will now need to know what materials you will need to create a bookcase.

Materials

  1. Oak plywood (This is very strong)
  2. Carpenter Glue
  3. 6-penny fishing nails
  4. Brads (Depending on the size you want, you may need more then one size)
  5. Wood Filler
  6. Sandpaper
  7. Satin or Paint

This is what you will need to create a bookcase, remember, if you ever forget any dimensions etc… You always have your plan to revert back to, now lets carry on, I will now give you some tips before you build it, also below is a nice little video I found which shows you how to put one together. I always thing that videos work better then texts because they are easier to understand.

Wood working tips…

  1. Draw out all your cuts before cutting anything, it is better to rub out some pencil then to go buy a new piece of wood. Remember drawing things out onto the wood is like transferring your plan to wood.
  2. Begin to cut your wood but give your self an extra half centimeter on each side so you can sand it down into a straight and smooth line.
  3. Tools are dangerous so it is always best to wear the correct protection, we don’t want you loosing an eye now do we.

Here is the video! I hope it helps, remember this is a very simple video, woodworking is all about having fun so enjoy your self and just use this video as a rough guide.
